    • Equine Yard Technician

      Hartpury University and Hartpury College are among the UK’s leading specialist education providers in agriculture, animal, equine, sport and veterinary nursing.

       

      Hartpury’s commercial yard enables students to gain a wealth of practical and work experience in all aspects of horse care and management. It features stabling for 230 horses, including 125 boxes for student livery. Facilities also include two horse walkers, four indoor schools, three outdoor schools, limited turnout and a non-slip trot-up.

       

      The Equine Yard Technician will support the Equine Department in providing an outstanding and safe experience for students, commercial users and ensure a high standard of horse welfare. The role supports the Equine Team in the day to day running of the Equine Unit, assisting with the supervision of students whilst undertaking practical tasks and supervising student liveries. The post holder will also be part of our team hosting and assisting with the running of International Equine Events and commercial bookings throughout the year.

       

      We require a team player who has the enthusiasm and drive to motivate students and maintain our professional standards. The successful applicant will be provided with the opportunity to work towards improving and developing their riding ability within two staff development lessons per week. The accommodation comprises of a single occupancy double bedroom within a shared recently refurbished farmhouse situated on-site. Facilities include a large communal living room, kitchen and garden with parking. A pre-paid meal card is provided for use at food outlets around the campus.

      About Us

       

      Hartpury University’s estate boasts its own 1,000 acre commercial Home Farm split across several sites. The dairy is part of a mixed farming enterprise, and the herd is comprised of 250 Autumn calving Holstein-Friesians. Cows are milked twice a day through a 16:32 rapid-exit De Laval parlour.

       

       

      About You

       

      The ideal candidate will be able to milk, carry out stock tasks, and operate machinery to a high standard, and be responsible for the dairy in the absence of the Head Herdsperson.   You will have an interest in working with, and demonstrating best practice to, students.

       

      You will also be expected to be a flexible team player, with a willingness to assist on the other enterprises as needed.

      You will be a responsible and reliable Exam Invigilator who will form part of our Exams team, working with us on a flexible basis during examination periods. You will be required to run exam sessions, working to ensure that all candidates are supervised and their individual needs catered for during each exam. You should have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills; the ability to handle situations in a calm and logical manner and to work independently as well as part of a team while supporting and taking direction from the Examinations Officer – you might be a retired professional, a recent graduate or just looking to supplement your income.

       

      This role has flexible hours and could fit around other commitments. There is also opportunity to provide specialist examination support for which further details are available upon request. Full training will be provided.

      Hartpury College of Further Education is an Ofsted Outstanding (2018) college, with an A level pass rate of 99.2%. We are the highest achieving land-based college in the UK (DfE 2017/18) and we are also rated Ofsted Outstanding (2019) for our residential provision.

       

      You will be teaching students on our Further Education animal-related courses at levels two and three. The successful applicant will be driven and self-motivated and integral in maintaining the high standards set within the department.  You will need to have a thorough knowledge of a wide range of animals and have good links with industry.

       

      You will be expected to deliver exceptional teaching which will assist students to achieve excellent results. You will be able to inspire students to appreciate and enjoy Animal Management, in particular science-based modules, instilling in them a passion for the subject and a desire to develop their understanding.  In addition, you will be a personal tutor, advising and guiding individuals in their progress, success and career aspirations.

       

      Ideally, you will possess an HND or equivalent qualification in Animal Science/Management or a related subject and have a teaching qualification, although this is not essential and if our chosen candidate does not have a teaching qualification, our comprehensive staff development scheme will support this.
